What is MUN?

MUN is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about current events, topics in international relations, diplomacy, and the United Nations agenda. The participants role-play as diplomats representing a nation in a simulated session of a committee of the United Nations, such as the Security Council or the General Assembly, at a conference. Participants research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems.

Who can apply to the MUN Program?

Students with or without experience may apply to join the MUN Program.

The two major types of roles in a MUN conference are:

• Delegate positions

• Student officer positions

To apply for a delegate position, no prior MUN experience is required, unless otherwise indicated. As a delegate, you will be assigned a country to represent and will seek to resolve a global issue based on your country’s perspectives and policies. Your core responsibilities will be:

• To suggest actions and solutions to global issues that are aligned with your country’s policy (views);

• To collaborate with other delegates who are representing other countries that share your country’s views to create a resolution (a document that suggests possible solutions to a global issue);

• Debate the resolution to get other countries to vote for it to pass, which would make it a binding global document for nations to follow.

Applying for a student officer position at a MUN conference typically requires a certain level of experience and knowledge to fulfill this role's responsibilities effectively. Here are some general experiences and qualifications that a student should ideally possess before applying for a chair position.

Prior to attending the conference, a student officer is expected to conduct research on a specific topic. This research will eventually be used by conference delegates to help them become more informed on the topic. At the conference, student officers will be responsible for facilitating debate and conference procedures. Being a student officer comes with great responsibility.

There will potentially be a number of online training meetings hosted by the conference administration team before the conference.

Conferences - The High School MUN club is scheduled to participate in two MUNs; one locally and another internationally.
